Balance and Gravity: Hand building

In this 3.5-hour workshop with Hadrian Mendoza, you will learn how to use clay’s weight and balance to create self-suspended sculptures.

During the class, Hadrian will guide students as you hand-build simple shapes to construct complex, modular structures. As you work, you will learn about the structural limits of clay and how we can push them to create exciting new forms. Hadrian will demonstrate how to use temporary props such as sticks and tape to support the clay as it hardens and gains the strength to support itself.

The techniques and limits Hadrian presents in the workshop demonstrations can then be applied to all facets of working with clay, whether students prefer hand-building or wheel-throwing. Students’ finished artwork will be expressive sculptures that bend and twist as the clay’s strength is tested and challenged.

By the end of the workshop, you will have your own geometric sculpture, experience in building modular forms, and an understanding of how to use balance to create gravity-defying ceramics.
